NEWS STORIES (Re block watch programs):

Charging for City-Managed Block Watch?

It happened in Oakland. Check this out. Bottom line is the city charges for programs either currently being accomplished by Sultan's VOA, and will soon be handled by caring citizens.

Excerpts from this Oakland City Council Resolution re their "findings" of the "cost" of crime:

"Investing in a coordinated systmes of early intervention, community policing and violence-prevention...reduce(s) economig & emotional costs...."

"Crime in Oakland [any city] disrupts local commercial activity, reduces business and industrial productivity, deters tourism and outside financial investments, and depreciates the value of real estate."

"As the density of residential development increases, the cost of providing policy and violence and crime prevention services also increases."

[Our thanks to a citizen who sent this to us, asking that we share this with other residents..]

11/29/07 Town Hall Meeting, Sultan Middle School

Synopsis:

Crystal Hill, Lonn Turner, Jay Prueher, Denise Beaston, Dorothy Croshaw, Tralina ? and Joe Beavers sent his wife in his place, my wife and myself. I think there were a few others from Gold Bar and I think Lauren King was one but am not sure. Debbie Copple was attending to the coffee and goodies.

County Sheriff's deputies were there: Barry Ruchty was there as was Rob Beidler and Tom Greene. Also Jonelle Fenton-Wallace and David Chitwood of the Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force.
The meeting was opened by Mayor Elect Carolyn Eslick. The featured speaker was Lynda Harvey, who is in charge of the Tulalip Police Office of Emergency Management. She is also the Block Watch coordinator for Snohomish Co.

Lynda coordinated the Community Emergency Response Team training in October at SCFD 26's station 54. Pictures were taken there primarily by Bobbie Low. She provided two CDs to everyone and I condensed them to a single CD and made a couple of Power Point presentations with them If you are interested I can loan you my CD - maybe leave it with Deb Copple.

To all appearances, the Block Watch meeting in Sultan was well attended. Lynda has opened the door for a lot of people but now the community has to take the next step. There are a few who have taken the initiative to be Block Watch captains but there is a lot of work yet to do in this department.

Lynda had large maps on the wall of the Sultan and Gold Bar areas - one was a regular street layout and the other an aerial view. These were in the form of pdf files. The same information is basically available online from Snohomish County. I managed to get one large map and the only CD she had. I made four copies of the CD and left one with Deb Copple, one with Sultan City Hall and the others with Gold Bar. With access to the maps one can locate an area they are interested in and make a small map. At least I have been able to do so.
