DICK-DOUBEK ISSUE - JOHN DOUBEK PROPERTY (ON FIFTH DRIVE)

Updated May 19, 2003

Below is a close-cropped picture taken by John Dick, of what looks to be a septic drainfield "overflow" from a neighbor's "home" business, where it appears that a concrete slab was installed over a septic drainfield. The below photo, and others given to council members during the March 19th council meeting, supported ProSultan board member John Dick's safety complaints he brought to council after it was clear to him that Sultan Building Official Craig Bruner was not acting in good faith to address his concerns on suspected code violations.

THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2003: We have spoken with resident John Dubek twice this week. His quick response to address Mr. Dick's concerns is laudable. Mr. Doubek contacted and set up meetings with both Building Official Craig Bruner, a Snohomish County Health Department official, Connie Dunn (Sultan's Public Works Director), and the Sultan police. He has also willingly agreed to fax me documentation confirming the results of each of those visits. We will post that information, along with a summary of our conversations with Mr. Doubek, as soon as we receive them from Mr.Doubeck.

By the way, John and Stephanie Doubek were both concerned about the photo below. In our conversations, Mr. Doubek explained this was not the result of a failing drainfield, but a plugged sewer drain outlet by his renter, who was evicted shortly thereafter. Mr. Doubek was also concerned about comments made during the March 19th council meeting about the chemicals he keeps on this property, an issue we will address in our article, that indicated some of the chemicals on his property were used illegally in the creation of methamphetamines, and requested that we remove references that he was running a meth lab, which, of course, is completely false. We checked the transcription and the only reference to "meth lab" was made by councilmember Rob Criswell. If this had been a "background" comment by an unidentified individual, we would have been happy to remove it from our transcription; it was, however, a public comment made by an elected official, and as such, must remain in the transcript. We have explained this to Mr. Doubek.

There's no doubt in my mind that at least some danger existed with some of the chemicals on this property. Despite the fact they are tightly secured with child-proof lidsm the property is not secured by a fence and the chemicals were not "locked down." However, as a "lay" person, I am ill equipped to judge the danger from acid stain, product that contains 5% muriatic acid. Here is a website link that describes that product, for scrutiny by others: www.brickform.com/products_acidstain.htm
