NOVEMBER, 2003 ELECTIONS:

JIM FLOWER

(Council Pos. #5 - running against John Dick)

Updated 10-8-03

How could anyone forget? It was won by Rob Criswell, and wouldn't have been necessary had not Rusty and Jana Drivstuen voted illegally during the 2000 election, changing the future of Sultan.

INTERVIEW: Requested, no response ever received. We then requested an interview to specifically address his views on the environment, as testified during public hearings. At first he agreed, then after some consideration, he declined. (Probably a wise decision on his part.)

However, we do have excerpts of testimony by Jim Flower at the 4/2/02 Industrial Park Master Plan hearing, his 10/2/02 interview in council, and his testimony at 6/17/03 hearing on Sultan's Comprehensive Plan update. For a candiate offering "maturity" and claims of bringing STABILITY to the council, Mr. Flower's testimony on his "creative solutions" for Wagley Creek would seem to run counter to his political rhetoric. Also, in his 10/2/02 council interview for a planning commissioner, Mr. Flower states that his decisions as a Plannning Commissioner, should he be appointed, would not affect him, yet his statements in the 4/2/02 Industrial Park Master Plan hearing confirm he's always planned on building a store on property located within 50 feet of Wagley Creek. No surprise he's advocating a 25- foot buffer zone for that creek he calls "A Drainage Ditch." (Don't get us wrong, folks. We're not opposed to Jim's plans. What we're opposed to is his bid for a seat on the council or planning commission to assist in the accomplishment of that plan, and his radical enviornmental "solutions.")

Things you won't read in the voter's pamphlet:

  • Jim owns Flower Racing, a well-known -- and apparently well-regarded -- racing firm located in Sultan.
  • Jim is the first person to publicly refer to Wagley Creek as "The Wagley Ditch" or "The Drainage Ditch."
  • Jim recommends a 25-foot buffer for Wagley Creek, rather than the current 100 feet.
  • Jim has also recommended "re-routing" Wagley Creek to what he's been told was its original destination, eastward to the Wallace River. (Here's a map of Wagley that would contradict that information.)
  • Jim plans to build a store on his shy-acre property on Rice Road, about 35 feet south of Wagley Creek.
