Flower’s Manifesto 3-19-07 A Statement of Motives and Intent By Jim Flower
I have served the citizens of Sultan for almost four years, and it has been an honour. As a twenty-year veteran of doing business in Sultan, I have seen many changes in our community. As we develop, the pace of this change quickens, and careful planning is crucial. Today I am announcing my intent to run for re-election to City Council. I am announcing early because my friends and neighbors need to know that I can be counted and relied upon. My motives are quite simple: this is my home, and I intend to stay. I have a vision for the Sultan that I would like to live in. This vision includes retaining our local police force. I believe that the relationship between a community and its law enforcement is a defining factor of that community, and that farming out its security is a mistake. Sultan has had that special relationship since 1906, and now is not the time to toss such a proud tradition. This vision also includes a strong commercial base, providing jobs and a revenue stream to support our city. We need retail sales tax dollars, and that does not come from residential development. I believe in transparency. For the community to trust its government, the Council and Mayor must communicate with the citizens, and together we will choose the best path to our future. I also believe in community involvement and volunteerism. When people donate their time and energy to make Sultan a better place, they also reinforce the social fabric that helps make this our home. We are at a time and place in our history where people can make a difference. I am asking that more of us get involved, and help make this city a better place to live.
Sincerely and respectfully submitted,
Jim Flower
