GRAVEL INFORMATION
Note: this page desperately needs to be updated! It was thrown together in January of 2001 when news of DNR's Powerhouse project broke and has been updated only occasionally. Events unfolded so quickly during the DNR issue, we never found an opportunity to organize it as we'd like. But if you have the time to browse, there's lots of info here that we hope will still be of use.

UPDATE ON ROWE'S GRAVEL TRUCK

UPDATE 1-10-02: In our continuing discourse on this subject (which is becoming nothing, if not silly), I reprint the following, which is an exerpt of a 1-10-02 posting on my discussion forum by someone who bills himself as "A Concerned Citizen":

" Not once has an apology graced the hallowed frames of this website. Not once have you held yourself accountable for some of your inexcusable actions. Nor has there been any corrections even put up to attempt to undo the lies that you print. An example is in order, I do believe. This website, yourself and Loretta Storm told your followers of C.H. Rowe's "brand new gravel truck." You expressed the view to all that would listen that Rowe bought that truck to participate in hauling gravel out of the "Powerhouse Project." This in itself was ridiculous. Yet you did not retract. You did not correct and you instead continued. For those who do not yet know, Mr. Kisenbacher and Miss. Storm found out many months ago that the dump truck in question was part of C.H. Rowe Trucking; That Rowe Trucking had it for sale (the sign was on the other side of the picture that Higgens ran in another of his useless articles); and, lest we forget Rowe had owned it for years and it had 250,000 + Km/Miles (I don't know which) on its odometer. That is not new. That could not even be misinterpreted as new..... and yet you continued. "

Our response is:

As I have repeatedly said, if someone can offer me "proof" that I have incorrectly reported something on this website, I will make a correction or retraction immediately. We are interested in the truth, not falsehoods. We leave that to enough others in town. I have reprinted below this person's statement, into which I have inserted our responses:

" Not once has an apology graced the hallowed frames of this website.(untrue) Not once have you held yourself accountable for some of your inexcusable actions.(untrue) Nor has there been any corrections even put up to attempt to undo the lies that you print. (untrue)An example is in order, I do believe. This website, yourself (this posting was addressed to my husband, Ray Kistenmacher) and Loretta Storm told your followers of C.H. Rowe's "brand new gravel truck." You expressed the view to all that would listen that Rowe bought that truck to participate in hauling gravel out of the "Powerhouse Project." (We inferred that. We "accused" Mayor Rowe of incredible insensitivty and poor judgment, a t the least.) This in itself was ridiculous. Yet you did not retract. You did not correct and you instead continued. For those who do not yet know, Mr. Kisenbacher and Miss. Storm found out many months ago that the dump truck in question was part of C.H. Rowe Trucking; That Rowe Trucking had it for sale (untrue)(the sign was on the other side of the picture that Higgens ran in another of his useless articles) (absolutely untrue); and, lest we forget Rowe had owned it for years and it had 250,000 + Km/Miles (I don't know which) on its odometer. (I cannot verify those "facts" for myself and I will certainly not take the word of someone posting anonymously on my webiste.) That is not new. That could not even be misinterpreted as new..... and yet you continued. "

UPDATE 12-1-01: During the last three council sessions, Mayor Rowe has made derisive comments, mocking use the of the term, "shiny, new gravel truck," a childish display of unprofessionalism on the Mayor's part, at the least. Mayor C. H. Rowe is an ELECTED OFFICIAL, and "making fun" of taxpayers and voters (whether or not they reside within the city limits), degrades himself, his office and the people he represents.

Regardless, if a gravel truck has a bright, new paint job and shows little or no wear and tear, and is shiny-clean and spotless, and has not been seen before the community, I believe the adjectives, "shiny" and "new" can be applied appropriately. And when this story was run on our website and in the Monroe Monitor last summer -- during the height of Sultan's "gravel fever" -- there was NO "FOR SALE" SIGN on either the shiny, new red one shown above, or the beat-up old gravel truck which was parked next to it, and is parked still in the same spot.

Perhaps the mayor needs to reevaluate both the tone and content of his humor.

UPDATE 7-27-01: Mayor Rowe's Truck - still no "for sale" sign. Could it be the Mayor was mistaken?

UPDATE 7-10-01: According to Mayor Rowe during the Traveler's Park hearing on July 9, 2001, this truck has had a "For Sale" sign on it for a long time. When this picture was taken, it did not have one. It did not have a "For Sale" sign on it as of 4:00 a.m. on the morning following the 7/9/01 hearing, either. According to Mayor Rowe, he has owned this truck "for several years." At this point, does it matter? At the least, the mayor is "guilty" of poor judgement in placing this truck in full view of virtually everyone in Sultan sensitive to anything "gravel-related." But it doesn't seemto be a very far reach from "gavel to gravel," which is separated by a single letter "R" which some might say stands for Rowe.

OUR ORIGINAL POSTING: Mayor Rowe's shiny new gravel truck, complete with pup behind it. It has been parked right on the north side of Highway 2 on Koenig lumber yard property.
CORRECTION: Per a note from the Koenig family, we would like to advise that this truck has been owned by Mayor Rowe for "...well over a year...the property it was sitting on is co-jointly owned by Mr. Rowe and Mr. L. Koehler...the property has never been owned by anyone in the Koenig family. All recent site changes have been done by Rowe and Koehler. Our sincere apologies for this uninentional misinformation. It was our understanding that this was Koenig property. It is never our attempt to misinform. Indeed, that is the very reason we started this website. I appreciate having received the correction.

STUDIES / DNR DOCUMENTS

(check out our DNR webpage)

READ SELECTED STUDIES on which most of the Department of Natural Resouces' DNS was based. Most of these studies were performed in 1996/97 because Sultan was the #3 alternative to Granite Falls, but was rejected. (It is 1,900 kb in Adobe Acrobat, so be patient. There is a great deal of information here.

View the complete "Mitigated Determination of Nonsignificance (MDNS)" that was sent to affected agencies and stakeholders. (Nothing was sent to the tax-paying public who owns this land, Snohomish PUD, or the WSDOT.)

View a summary of the salient points of the MDNS, if you do not have Adobe Acrobat. (To download a free copy of Acrobat, click here.)

DNR letter sent to attendees of their "Landscape scoping" meetings for the basin area. This "meeting" (open house-type format) was scantily attended since no one was aware of it and no notice was posted until AFTER the event. The City claims they did not know about it, and that they received the copy via the Tribes. (View a copy of the "Notice" of this non-event.) In a conversation with Bob Suda, he indicated this "landscape" meeting had nothing to do with notification of the gravel project, but we have since found out that that is the only notice the public received, and that attendees of this "open house" (it was NOT a meeting) were only told of it if they happend to stop at the appropirate information table and asked.
