UPDATE on Summer, 2005 "Improvements" to U.S. 2

(dubbed by some as WSDOT's "traffic calming devices" for U.S. 2)

During the September 26, 2005 meeting of the Highway 2 Safety Coalition, residents and users of this roadway complained rather loudly about the "patch" job recently performed by WSDOT. Rick Mithell, Engineering Manager for the Sno-King area, took immediate action to address those concerns. We thank him for his amazingly quick response, which appears below.

September 27, 2005 email from Richard M. Mitchell, PEI, WSDOT's Engineering Manager for the Sno-King area:

I have looked into the question raised at the meeting last night concerning the "bumps" left by our maintenance operations. The bumps were indeed left as a result of our maintenance patching of worn pavement between Sultan and Monroe. What happened was a new grade of asphalt emulsion was used for this work which did not flatten out as well as the asphalt previously used. We have since corrected this problem. Our people will be out over the next few days with a grinder to smooth off the rougher patches which will improve the ride of the highway.

I hope this answers everyone's questions about this situation. If you could, would please forward this information....
